Wren On Her Own - Wren's Exit

Description

Finally we have Wren's exit.

It had been months since Wren had left Vale, and left Renier, behind her. With his last child dead, and his mate never to return, Wren knew that there was nothing left for Renier in Vale. No reason he would return. Wren could only hope that a loyal Valerian had stepped up to return Vale to its former glory.

Wren thought on those wolves she left behind, as she so often did. Her closest friend Loki who had stayed by her side through it all. Akuto, as dear as a sister to her, who had fled safely from Vale to find a new happy life. Kimber, one of the few Black Watch wolves who showed her compassion in her hour of most need. Enzo who despite his relation to Renier, brought her food loyally every day. And of course her Shenan. Her sweet, sweet Shenandoah.

Wren grieved for her lost daughter every day. Her mind replayed that pre-dawn moment over and over, when she and Renier had returned empty handed from the stormy forest, and Alar had reported all search parties unsuccessful as well. The night was too cold for a pup as young as Shen to have survived for so long. She was gone. But some dark voice told Wren that it could have been for the best. Shenandoah had always gravitated toward her father. Her father, who could only hurt, who could only destroy. Renier loved Shenandoah, his daughter was his world, his stars and moon and sky. Wren could see the love in his amber eyes, burning fierce as twin suns rising at dawn. She knew that look well. And despite everything that had happened she missed it. She missed what once was. Before everything had gone wrong.

Though as warm and passionate as suns, Renier’s love could burn as well. It could kill. It had killed. Her thoughts shifted then to the beloved and noble Faust, founder of Vale. Faust who had given her a home, who had given her a purpose, who had given his life for her misjudgment.

The anguish was unbearable. It felt as if it was beating her into the ground, drowning her in wave after wave of despair, sweeping her off her paws and refusing to let her gain her footing however hard she struggled. Often she wanted to just close her eyes and let herself be swept away, surrender herself to the waves and escape from the dull, throbbing torture that consumed her life.

But she couldn’t. She needed to keep trying. There was nothing she could do for her friends anymore. Nothing she could do except never return. Hope and believe that their lives were better for it. But even if she was helpless to assist her friends, she was not helpless to assist others. Still behind her sage green eyes was wisdom, and knowledge. Assets to the world, assets that would be wasted if she were to give in to her despair. She may be alone now, but she would find somewhere to start new. Somewhere she could devote her life solely to healing others, improving their lives, and doing good. Do what she can to find atonement after all the lives she had played a part in destroying.

Leaving the past behind, Wren moved forward with a new resolve. Never would she forget her past. But always would she work for the future.
